About us

Sunbeams Day Nurseries in Harrogate and Leeds are headed by mother of two, Registered General Nurse and Health Visitor, Kate Plews.  Kate places great value on the family unit. She has created nurseries which provide a stimulating environment in which care and education is provided for children from birth to 5 years. Kate develops our nurseries using the Early Years Foundation Stage (see our parents zone for more info.)

Sunbeams’ nurseries are purpose-built and planned to meet the needs of babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers in their own special areas. In fact, our Harrogate nursery is specifically built to help children learn – right from the lighting to the soundproofed walls which aid speech development.

Psychologists have proved that the first five years of our children’s lives are crucial. It is in these first years that we can deeply affect our children’s self esteem and shape their future by what we say and do.

During this stage it is important to place children in a stimulating environment where, not only can they learn and absorb effectively, but they can begin the process of relating to people outside their own family.

We want the parents to be comfortable in the knowledge that their child is enjoying the loving care that Sunbeams offers. We do not aim to replace the parents, but to support them in the care and education of their children.

To ensure the best for each child, we do not automatically move children through the rooms when they reach a certain age, we wait for the child to reach the right developmental phase for progression. We work closely with parents to establish the best transition for each child.

We only employ friendly, well-qualified and highly experienced staff, and we were one of the first nurseries in the UK to gain the Investors in Children Award.

Our key principals, which all our staff work to, are:

  • Every child is unique – Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured – but they each do it in their own time and way.
  • Building positive relationships – Your child will learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships and with encouragement will become familiar with books  as a source of stories and pictures.
  • Providing an enabling environment – Our nursery environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning.
  • Learning and development – Each child’s progress is individual and they do not make progress in all areas at the same time.
